Culture and tips

Carolina wild petunia adapts to various cultural conditions from part sun to light shade. It tolerates the dappled shade of deciduous trees. Sandy or average soil that drains freely is best; it prefers for the soil to remain damp during the heat of summer, but will tolerate some drought. Sow seed directly in fall as it ripens, or store refrigerated until spring and direct sow then. If collecting your own seed, carefully observe the ripening capsules as they change from green to brown, and collect prior to when they split and expose the seeds (usually about 2 months after bloom). Allow this plant to naturalize in rock gardens, or use it as a ground cover along paths and bed edges. Excellent in pollinator and native plant gardens, especially where soils are poor and dry.
